ONGOING CEDAR RAPIDS WINTER EVENTS

Music on the Move (Wednesdays, 9:15-10:00am, 2nd & 4th Saturdays of the month @ 9:15-10am & 10:15-11am) Sing, play, listen, laugh, move, learn and bond with your little one (baby – preschooler). We will have fun each week tickling our senses while playing with (learning!) music, language, motor, and pre-academic skills. Lisa is a board-certified music therapist – all children are welcome! STEM Family Free Night (Last Friday of the month, 5:00-8:00pm) Help solve a unique Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math challenge in the STEM Studio focused on problem-based learning. Iowa Children’s Museum. Free

Free First Saturdays for Students (First Saturday of the month, 9:30am-4:00pm) Students of all ages (preschool through college) are invited to visit the NCSML’s exhibits for free on the first Saturday of each month. Visitors will also be able to take part in different themed activities and celebrations. College students must bring a current school ID card. National Czech & Slovak Museum & Library. Free. 

CRSA After School-Program (January 6 – March 9) The CRSA will offer FREE Winter after school program for players ages 6-9. The sessions will consist of foot-skills, agility/coordination exercises, and games. Must register. CRSA Indoor Facility. Free

Tween Yoga & Mindfulness (January – February, Tuesdays 4:15-5:15pm) This always popular class is on-going through February. We practice the ancient tools from yoga of movement & breath work with fun and focus to help these pre-teens navigate their ever changing worlds.
We also have an optional service project that the kids get to do. Last time we went to HACAP to help box up donated food. Taught by Heather English and Ruthie Dunn. Toula Yoga. Cost: $10/class

Preschool Open Gym (Saturdays, 11:15am-12:15pm) Looking for something to do for a mom’s group or an activity for your child? We provide a preschool open gym for ages 3-6 years old that is ran inside our preschool area. This is an unstructured time that allows your child to explore, play and do the activities they want to. Supervision is provided, coaching and spotting is kept to a minimum. Great way to let your kids burn off some energy! It is inside, so no matter the weather outside, it is a good experience! Think of it as a huge, padded playground! Some spotting and one to one attention (depending on size of open gym, safety first!) Kids First Gymnastics. Cost: $10

Story Time (January 15 and February 5 & 19, 9:00-11:00am) Come spend the morning at Kids First and enjoy a few stories. Following that is play time to burn off some energy on our large, padded, indoor playground. No previous experience is needed and the children are supervised by experienced and safety trained coaches. Kids First Gymnastics. Cost: Free, additional playtime $5/child or $15/daycare

Scholastic Chess Club (January 19 and February 2 & 16, 2:00-4:30pm) All K-12 students are free to join us for a chess lesson and friendly play. We meet up at 2 pm with the lesson at 2:30 pm, wrapping up at 4:30 pm. Our meeting room is Beems A. Cedar Rapids Downtown Public Library. Free

Open Studio (January 11, 18 & 25, 10:00am-12:00pm) Kids K-12 join us in the studios to try your hand at different types of music and various art mediums with guidance from professional artists and musicians. Bring a friend! The Music and Arts Studios at the Eastern Iowa Arts Academy. Cost: free/members, $5/non-members

Escape this Bookstore! Event (January 11, 2:00-2:30pm) Join us as we explore the newest addition to the exciting Escape This Bookstore! series. Decide your destiny by solving puzzles and riddles to pass each challenge and get to the next adventure! For ages 8-12. Barnes & Noble. Free

Friday Flicks: Abominable (January 10, 3:15-4:45pm) After discovering a Yeti on the roof of her apartment building, teenage Yi and her two friends embark on an epic quest to reunite the magical creature with his family. Laser Tag: Cedar Rapids Event (January 10, 6:00-9:00pm) Join us for a fun-filled night of laser tag! Partake in as many games of laser tag as you want, great for everyone ages 13 and up. Register now and we will be waiting for you to check in at the door! We will be playing a wide variety of game modes with state of the art laser tag equipment. With 40 sets of taggers (games with up to 20 versus 20 players at a time) and 30 large inflatable barriers, the Northwest Recreation Center gym will be turned into an immersive and exciting laser tag venue for the day! Kid N Canvas at Collins Rd Hyvee (January 11, 10:00am-12:00pm) Kid Alien – Kid N Canvas classes are for kids about 8 to 16. All supplies (canvas, paints, brushes and apron) are provided for you, but please on clothes that are ok to get paint on. Class lasts about 1.5 to 2 hrs. Hy-Vee is providing a $10 gift card (per ticket) to shop with while your kids are painting. Check in at 9:45 am, painting starts at 10 am. Storytime! (January 11, 11:00-11:30am) Thelma the Unicorn is reluctant to share her horn and sparkles again, but with the help of her best friend Otis, she realizes the importance of spreading love and joy no matter what people think. Activities to follow. Barnes & Noble. Free

WinterFest at Jones Park (January 11, 12:00-4:00pm) Embrace the Winter Wonderland at Jones Park! Enjoy an afternoon playing in the snow with cross-country skiing, snowshoeing, sledding, ice-skating and scavenger hunts. Warm up when you roast a s’more by the fire or grab a warm hot chocolate. This event is FREE to the public!  Please bring your own sled. Limited ice skates. Equipment and introductory lessons in cross country skiing, snowshoeing, and ice skating are courtesy of SOKO Outfitters and CR Parks and Recreation. *Make sure to keep an eye on the event page because this will only be held if we have snow.* Jones Park. The Enchanted Forest: An Opera for Kids (January 11, 1:30-3:00pm) Come to The Iowa Children’s Museum for a performance of The Enchanted Forest by the Cedar Rapids Opera Theatre. The Enchanted Forest is a “choose your own adventure” opera for children, with original story and lyrics by Anna Young. The characters include a Prince or Princess, Wizard, Villian, and Confidante (BumbleBee). The children in the audience get to decide if the lead is a hero (Prince) or heroine (Princess). Performed by members of CR Opera Theatre’s Young Artist Program. There will also be a special appearance by Miss Iowa 2019 Emily Tinsman. Don’t miss this one-of-a-kind event! Nerf Wars (January 12, 1:00-2:00pm) You will be divided into platoons and then you and your comrades will construct a fortification to protect your flag. The battle will begin and fought until the mission objective of retrieving the enemy’s flag is obtained. Ammunition will be provided for the event. Dog tags for all participants. Kid’s YogART Camp (January 13, 9:00am-12:00pm) What is YogART? It is a fun and energizing camp that integrates the calming and focused practices of art and yoga. Challenge to Change Inc. developed this camp to blend the two practices. Your child will experience the beauty of group activities at opening and closing time along with yoga and art instruction. A healthy snack will be provided. We ask that your child bring a water bottle. Children ages 4-12.

Crafts for Kids: Make Your Own Fossils! (January 13, 2:00-3:00pm) Come to Hiawatha Public Library and make your own “fossils” out of air drying clay! This event is open to children and their caregivers. Hiawatha Public Library. Free

Crafts with a Cop – Valentines for Vets (January 13, 5:00-7:00pm) This is a special Crafts with a Cop event! Children ages 5-13 are invited to make valentines for veterans! Kids must have an adult with them. Stop in anytime between 5:00 and 7:00pm. All supplies will be provided. Cedar Rapids Police Department. Free

Wandering Woods Club (January 14, 10:00-11:00am) The “Club” is a time set aside for play at Wickiup Hill where you know other children will be here to play and make new friends. There is no formal program, but our naturalists will bring around a critter or two to meet while you are here. You can play inside the Learning Center or outside at the Nature Playscape – Wickiup’s Wandering Woods. All ages. Online registration required at least two days prior to the scheduled event. Middle Schoolers: Help us make The Ultimate Box Fort! (Januray 14, 1:00-3:00pm) We need your creativity and out-of-the-box thinking here at Hiawatha Public Library! Meet us in the community room ready to make the world’s coolest box fort. (We’ll have the boxes, of course.) This event is open to middle schoolers. Hiawatha Public Library. Free

Pajama Storytime: The View from the Top (January 16, 6:30-7:30pm) Climb all the way to the top of the Eiffel Tower with some goofy—but true—stories, and then we’ll paint a spectacularly speckled picture of this legendary landmark. Wear your PJ’s and bring a stuffed friend to cuddle with. We’ll meet in the galleries for stories at 6:30 pm, surrounded by the artwork in the galleries, and then create a work of art to take home. Kids Ice Fishing Clinic (January 18, 9:00-11:30am) Bring the kids to the backwater area of Pinicon Ridge Park to send out the old year and learn the fine points of ice fishing. Participants will practice jigging with an ice fishing rod, learn how a depth finder works and attempt to view fish from an ice shack. All youth will receive a prize for their participation. The North Linn Fish and Game Club co-sponsors this clinic. Online registration required. Pinicon Ridge Park. Cost: $2.50/adult, $1/child 16 and under, or $5/family

Shrinky Dink Saturday (January 18, 10:00-11:30am) Design your own, or use our templates, to create unique keychains, magnets and pins! Includes 1 each- key chain, magnet, pin back, sheet of shrinky dink and use of coloring materials. More than one person can share a package. Children under 10 must be accompanied by an adult. Drop-In Workshop SnowPeople (January 18, 10:30am-2:30pm) New this year we have created several drop in workshops for some of our favorite clay projects!  Each project is available for creation between 10:30 am until 2:30 pm.  Workshops start on the half hour, and participants are welcome to stay until they are finished with their projects.  Grab your friends and family to create something fun together!  All age levels welcome, kids 8 and under must be accompanied by an adult. Pre-registration is not available–just stop in and have some fun! PAW Patrol Live! “Race to the Rescue” (January 21 & 22) Come roll with the PAW Patrol as everybody’s favorite heroic pups race to the rescue on the day of the Great Adventure Bay Race. When Mayor Goodway goes missing, Chase, Marshall, Skye and the rest of the PAW Patrol will need to team up with Ryder to save Adventure Bay’s mayor and stop Foggy Bottom’s Mayor Humdinger from winning the race. Little Sprouts: Jack Frost Painting (January 24, 10:00-11:00am) Painting with salt dissolved in water creates a fascinating display as it dries. Snow Gnomes – Saturday Family Workshop (January 25, 2:00-3:30pm) Snow Gnomes–Create a snow gnome from clay and then add some winter accessories to keep your gnome warm until Spring! Parents’ Night Out (January 31, 5:00-8:00pm) While parents enjoy a night out, kids will have a blast at Indian Creek Nature Center with new friends. February Code Plus Plus (February 1, 9:00am-3:00pm) Code++ is a one day event to teach 8th-12th grade students about programming. The beginner group will learn HTML and CSS to build their own website. Students with prior HTML and CSS experience may choose to add JavaScript to their skills in the advanced group. They will also learn about careers in computer science. A light breakfast and lunch will be included.

February Wheel Try It (February 1 @ 10:30am) This is a 2.5 hour wheel throwing workshop. In this class, we will assist you in learning how to center the clay on the wheel and how to create cups and bowls, with in-depth demonstrations. This class is more about the process of working with the wheel than a specific project. Great for kids and adults who are interested in developing a set of skills for working with clay. Each participant will complete at least 1-2 cups or bowls. This class is all about the experience and learning how to work with the pottery wheel.  This is a great way for kids and parents alike who are interested in working with clay to experience it firsthand.  Minimum age is 9 years old. Kids Kitchen Takeover Class – Valentine Style (February 2, 1:00-2:00pm) Join Nicole, your Collins Road Hy-Vee Dietitian, for some fun in the kitchen~Valentine style! The class is designed for 3 to 8 year olds but kids of all ages are welcome. Adult supervision and registration is required. Hy-Vee Collins Rd. Cost: $10/child

Storytime With a Twist (February 6, 10:00-10:30am) Reading and dancing are so much fun! Storytime With A Twist is a fun, active morning activity for your little one! Cinch World’s Toughest Rodeo (February 7-8) Fans can expect the absolute best of the best in cowboy and animal athletes competing to be the “TOUGHEST in the WORLD”, sanctioned by the Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association. This action-packed event will qualify winners to ride in the “million dollar” American rodeo in Dallas, as well as the ultimate opportunity to compete at the NATIONAL FINALS RODEO in Las Vegas, NV for the WORLD CHAMPION title! Who Was Rosa Parks? A Story Time (February 8, 11:00am-12:00pm) We are partnering with the Cedar Rapids Public Library for a children’s story program based on the Who Was series of biographies. These sessions will feature a reading of a Who Was biography and a hands-on activity to connect kids to the inspiring life of each story time’s subject. Join us on the second Saturday of each month to celebrate important historical and contemporary African Americans. This program is most beneficial for children between the ages of 6-12 years old. Trail Trekkers: Feet Beat Registration (February 15, 10:00-11:00am) Creatures big and small leave their tracks and traces in the mud and snow — birds, squirrels, deer, rabbits, mice and more! Go on a tracking walk, learn about food chains, and make an animal track craft. For preschoolers with adult. Dress for indoor and outdoor activities. Indian Creek Nature Center. Free

Nerf Indoor Shoot-Out (February 15, 1:00-4:00pm) Destroy the winter blahs! Grab your friends and take the fight indoors to Ushers Ferry Lodge. Play NERF games and take aim at our NERF shooting gallery to see who’s the best shot. Ushers Ferry Lodge. Cost: $21 non-res or $17 residents

Kids Day 2020 (February 17, 2:00-6:00pm) February is Children’s Dental Health Month and to celebrate we’re having our 14th Annual Kids Day! We’ll be seeing children all afternoon, but an appointment is not necessary to join the fun! Bowl For Kids’ Sake 2020 (February 18-29) It’s time for the BIGgest bowling party of the year – Bowl For Kids’ Sake 2020! Be one of the 1,600+ bowlers to grace the lanes at Cedar Rapids Bowling Center the last two weeks of February (18-29). Signing up to bowl can be done in 3 easy steps: team of 6, raise money, and GET READY TO HAVE FUN! Beer, pizza, prizes, and lots of bowling. Cedar Rapids Bowling Center. Donation Goal: $75/bowler

Pajama Storytime: Under the Big Top (February 20 @ 6:30pm) Ever wondered what it might be like to perform in a traveling circus? Join us for daring feats, thrilling stunts, and maybe a little clowning around. Wear your PJ’s and bring a stuffed friend to cuddle with. We’ll meet in the galleries for stories at 6:30 pm, surrounded by the artwork in the galleries,and then create a work of art to take home. It’s free for kids & their adult companions. Animal Pot – Saturday Family Workshop (February 22, 2:00-3:30pm) Animal Pot — Give your plant or keys a fun new home by creating a pot and turning it into your favorite animal. Pre-registration online is required for classes and most workshops.  Kids ages 8 and under MUST be accompanied by an adult.  Students’ work will be available for pickup 3 weeks after the end of their session/workshop. Disney in Concert – Magical Music from the Movies (February 22, 2:30pm & 7:30pm) Orchestra Iowa is proud to present Disney’s Magical Music from the Movies, featuring four Broadway caliber vocalists, clips from iconic Disney movies like Frozen, Beauty & the Beast, Mary Poppins plus more, a scripted narrative presented by the singers & Maestro Hankewich, and some of the best known film music in cinematic history. Laser Tag: Cedar Rapids Events (February 28, 6:00-9:00pm) A fun-filled night of laser tag! Partake in as many games of laser tag as you want, great for everyone ages 13 and up. Register now and we will be waiting for you to check in at the door! We will be playing a wide variety of game modes with state of the art laser tag equipment. With 40 sets of taggers (games with up to 20 versus 20 players at a time) and 30 large inflatable barriers, the Northwest Recreation Center gym will be turned into an immersive and exciting laser tag venue for the day! Paola Ayers
Paola, originally from Puerto Rico, came to Iowa to study at Iowa state University where Ryan, an Iowa native, won her heart and they’ve been married for five years. They now call Cedar Rapids home and work as landscape designers in North Liberty. They love watching their toddler, Olivia, grow and are excited to see her as a big sister in the Fall of 2019. Paola's hobbies include crafting, running, yoga, baking and anything handmade. She recently opened Pikosa Creations to share her creativity with the world. Her passions include family, kindness, desserts and vacations to the beach.
