Winter is well and truly upon us here in Iowa. And for me, it means that it’s time for my workout to move indoors.
I salute the moms out there who make a trip to the gym every day, or even more impressively – continue to bundle up and exercise outdoors.
But for me, I’ve found the best solution for these cold months is to do an indoor, at-home workout video.
When I look for a great workout, I have a few parameters:
- 30 minutes or less (Because, #momlife)
- Inexpensive or free
- Down-to-earth workout leaders (I’m sorry, I just can’t relate to your Malibu probs)
- Good exercise without being too intense (Because I do need to actually be able to pick my small children for the rest of the day.)
If you’re a mom like me who can relate to these preferences – read on!
Here are three low-cost or free workouts I highly recommend:
What it is: A 15 minute daily HIIT workout led by a fellow mom, personal trainer, and corrective exercise specialist who specializes in postpartum recovery. Whether you’re pregnant, just had a baby, or are years into motherhood, this workout feels like part-exercise class, part-physical therapy session. From their website, “MommaStrong is a fitness program engineered to teach you about your body and how to gain strength from the inside out.”
Frequency: New daily streaming workout 7 days a week, 365 days a year.
My two cents: My friend Kate recommended MommaStrong to me several months ago. Kate is a self-proclaimed exercise hater, and she has fallen in love with MommaStrong. I decided to give it a try, and two months in, I really like it. I can tell a significant difference in my body’s ability to perform daily tasks, and it’s easy to get the short HIIT workout in – regardless of what my day throws at me. I’m definitely a fan.
Walk at Home
What it is: Access to a month’s worth of indoor walking workouts, led by a variety of energetic and upbeat workout leaders. Each month offers a wide variety of walks from one mile to five miles, and strength training walks, too. Walk at Home is founded by Leslie Sansone – the Walk At Home expert for more than 30 years, and many of the walks are personally led by her.
Frequency: Each month, a set of at least 25 different walking videos are offered. You can opt to do the walk assigned to that particular day, or choose any other video offered that month.
My two cents: Walk at Home has been a great workout option for me. I find the workout leaders to be encouraging and the workouts are a great tension reliever. It’s more fun than walking on a treadmill, and much warmer than an outdoor walk in the winter!
Jessica Smith TV (YouTube Channel)
What it is: Jessica Smith is an experienced wellness coach, trainer and instructor who is down-to-earth, kind, and fun to work out with. She offers a wide variety of free workouts on her channel – although most are 30 minutes long or less. You will never be bored as she has uploaded literally hundreds of different workouts in the past 10 years. Bonus: Jessica’s adorable French bulldog makes appearances in the videos on a regular basis.
Frequency: Hundreds of workouts are currently available on her channel, and she adds new content each month.
My two cents: I discovered Jessica Smith’s workouts several years ago, and they are always a great option. Jessica is upbeat and positive without being annoying. From HIIT to low-impact workouts, yoga to kickboxing, there is something for every fitness level on her channel.
I feel so much better as a mom when I make exercise a priority in my day.
If you’re looking for a new way to get moving, I hope you’ll give one of my recommendations a try!
